I have lived along this stretch of the Gulf Coast long enough to know one thing for sure, if you are staying in Indian Shores and not getting on the water, you are missing the best part of it.
What makes this area so unique is that it sits on a barrier island less than half a mile wide, with two completely different bodies of water on either side. Out front, the Gulf of Mexico welcomes you with warm, crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life.
Out back, the Intracoastal Waterway stretches calm and protected, winding through mangrove tunnels where manatees surface quietly beside your kayak, if you're patient enough to wait for them. Between the two, Indian Shores offers some of the best water sports on Florida's Gulf Coast for every skill level and every age.
When people ask me about the best water sports Indian Shores has to offer, I always tell them it depends on how adventurous they are feeling that day. Here is what I personally recommend.
1. Jet Skiing in Calm Gulf Waters Near Indian Shores
For those days when peaceful paddling isn't what the group has in mind, jet skiing on the Gulf delivers the kind of pure speed-and-spray adrenaline that a beach vacation occasionally demands. That's why jet skis are usually my first suggestion for adventure seekers.
Because our coast sits next to the protected waters of the Gulf, the surface is typically smoother than the Atlantic's. This makes it much easier and far less intimidating for first-time visitors to navigate.
Several jet ski rental companies operate out of John's Pass Marina in Madeira Beach, just about 10 minutes from Indian Shores. They offer hourly rentals with brief safety orientations designed specifically for beginners.
The open Gulf waters give you plenty of room to open up the throttle, and the views of the coastline from a jet ski at full speed are spectacular in a way that's completely different from any other water activity on this list.
I always recommend booking earlier in the day. The water is calmer, the sun isn't as intense, and visibility is excellent. Plus, it's not unusual to spot dolphins surfacing nearby as you ride.
2. Parasailing with Sunset Views Over the Gulf
Parasailing might look intimidating from the beach, but I promise it feels smoother than it appears. The lift off is gradual, and once you are in the air, it is peaceful. From above, you see the entire Gulf Coast curve, the white sand stretching north and south, and sometimes even marine wildlife below.
From 300 feet above the Gulf of Mexico, the entire coastline unfolds beneath you. You'll see the white sand beaches stretching north toward Clearwater and south toward St. Pete Beach, the curve of the land bending gracefully along the turquoise water.
Several operators launch from nearby marinas in Madeira Beach and Clearwater, both just a short drive from Indian Shores. Aquatic Adventures at John's Pass is one I particularly recommend. They run tandem and triple parasail flights that launch directly from the boat. The whole flight lasts about 8 to 10 minutes in the air.
For couples looking for a unique date experience or teens seeking that perfect Instagram shot, this tends to be the highlight of the trip.
3. Kayaking and Paddleboarding Through Coastal Waterways
If you only do one water activity in Indian Shores, make it a kayak or paddleboard session on the Intracoastal Waterway. The calm, protected waters of the back bay are ideal for all skill levels and the wildlife you encounter on a morning paddle is genuinely spectacular.
And the wildlife you'll encounter? Genuinely spectacular. Herons standing motionless along the mangroves, crabs scuttling across sandy patches, and if you're lucky, manatees surfacing quietly just feet from your boat. Island Marine Rentals is the go-to local operator for good reason. I recommend booking a double kayak for 2 hours, it's the perfect amount of time to explore without rushing.
For families or anyone who wants to go deeper, guided eco tours are also available. Local guides will teach you about the mangrove ecosystems and the marine wildlife that calls this place home. It's equal parts education and adventure, and kids absolutely love it.
4. Snorkeling & Diving Underwater Gulf Coast
The Gulf of Mexico around Indian Shores is warm, clear, and shallow enough for excellent snorkeling right from the beach. But if you're willing to venture a little farther, the real underwater magic awaits.
Just a short boat ride away lies Egmont Key a small, uninhabited barrier island at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Accessible only by boat, this protected state park is widely considered one of the best snorkeling destinations on the entire Gulf Coast.
Snorkeling tours to Egmont Key run regularly out of Fort De Soto Park and from several charter operators at John's Pass. The trip takes about 45 minutes each way, and I promise you it's worth every minute. Pack a lunch, bring your camera, and plan to spend the day exploring both the underwater ruins and the island itself.
For certified divers, the adventure goes even deeper. Along the Gulf floor off Pinellas County, a series of artificial reefs have been deployed over the years; old ships, concrete structures, and purpose-built reef balls, creating excellent diving conditions. Local dive shops in the St. Pete Beach and Madeira Beach area offer guided reef dives, certification courses, and equipment rentals for those ready to descend.
5. Fishing Charters
Fishing on the Gulf Coast around Indian Shores isn't just one activity. You can cast your line from a pier or spend a full day on a deep-sea fishing charter 80 kilometers offshore in search of marlin and dorado.
For the easy-going crew: Grab a Florida fishing license, pick up a rod, and head to the Indian Shores fishing pier or the famous Fort De Soto fishing pier. Redfish, snook, sheepshead, and flounder are all within reach.
For the ones who want a little more: Hubbard's Marina at John's Pass has been turning casual fishermen into fish stories since 1928. They've got a trip for every version of you:
- Half-day inshore trips targeting redfish, snook, and trout in the back bays
- Full-day nearshore trips for grouper, snapper, and amberjack over the artificial reefs
- Overnight or multi-day deep sea: This is the big leagues. 50 miles out, chasing mahi-mahi and marlin. You come back with stories. And probably a very full freezer.
On charter trips, everything is included. All gear, all bait and your fishing license. The crew handles everything, from baiting your hook to showing you exactly when to set it.
And at the end of the trip, they'll even clean and bag your catch for you. It's one of those small details that makes the whole experience significantly more satisfying. You walk away with dinner, not a mess.
Florida fishing license: Required for shore fishing and pier fishing for anyone 16 and older. Available online at myfwc.com for a small fee. Not required if you're fishing on a licensed charter boat.
6. Surfing & Bodyboarding
The Gulf of Mexico is not a big wave destination. The waves are gentle, slow, and generally in the one-to-three foot range on most days, which makes Indian Shores beach perfect for swimming and bodyboarding, and occasionally acceptable for longboarding beginners, but not the place to come if you're chasing serious surf.
That said, after a passing storm system or a strong cold front in winter, the Gulf can produce surprisingly rideable four-to-six foot sets that local surfers take full advantage of. The best surf windows around Indian Shores typically happen in late fall and winter when cold fronts push through and generate the swells the Gulf needs.
Bodyboarding and boogie boarding, on the other hand, work beautifully in the gentle Gulf shore break year-round and are some of the most fun you can have in the water here without any experience or instruction whatsoever. Boards are available for rent from several Gulf Blvd shops.
Why Indian Shores Is Ideal for Water Activities
Indian Shores has pulled me into the water more times than any other place I've ever visited. There's something about having two different water worlds within a five-minute walk of each other, both full of life and beauty and the particular magic of the Gulf Coast, that makes staying dry feel like a waste.
Whatever your version of getting in the water looks like, Indian Shores has exactly the right conditions for it. Go find out. If you are planning a trip and want immediate access to the best water sports Indian Shores has to offer, and stay steps from your next Gulf Coast adventure.
