Treasure Island Florida Travel Guide: What I Tell Every First Time Visitor

I have watched a lot of people arrive in Treasure Island expecting a typical Florida beach town and leave wondering why they had never heard more about it before. Treasure Island does not compete with theme parks or high rise resort cities. It does something better. It gives you space, calm gulf waters, and sunsets that stop conversations mid sentence.

If you are planning your first visit, this Treasure Island Florida travel guide will help you understand how to experience it the right way.

What Treasure Island Florida Is Really Like

The first thing you notice is the width of the shoreline. Treasure Island Beach is wide enough that even during busier seasons you can spread out comfortably. The sand is soft and light, and the shallow shoreline makes swimming easy for families.

Because we sit on the Gulf side, the water is usually calmer than the Atlantic coast. That means easier paddleboarding, smoother jet ski days, and stress free swimming.

At the southern end, Sunset Beach offers a slightly quieter atmosphere with panoramic sunset views. It is one of my favorite evening spots. Bring a towel, sit down early, and just watch the light change over the water.

If you are coming for a true Gulf Coast beach vacation, this stretch of sand is the reason.

Things to Do in Treasure Island, Florida

On the Beach

The Gulf of Mexico at Treasure Island is warm, clear, and shallow with a gradually sloping bottom that makes it ideal for swimming at every skill level.

Beyond swimming, the beach rewards those who use it actively. Shell collecting at low tide produces excellent finds. Lightning whelks, moon snails, olive shells, and cockles wash in regularly, especially after a storm or high tide.

The sunrise walk on a near-empty beach before 7 AM is one of the most genuinely peaceful experiences the Gulf Coast offers. The Treasure Island Beach Trail, a paved 0.85-mile path along the mid-island beach, is perfect for morning walks, jogging, cycling, and rollerblading, with Gulf views for its entire length.

Gulf Front Park at 104th Avenue has an ADA beach access mobility mat, beach wheelchair rentals available at City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, beach volleyball courts, a playground, a concession stand open from 10 AM to 5 PM, umbrella and chair rentals, restrooms, and showers.

It's the most fully equipped beach access on the island and the natural starting point for a first visit.

Water Sports on Both Sides

The first thing visitors ask me is where to rent a kayak or a paddleboard. I send them to Treasure Island Beach Rentals at Gulf Front Park every time. They've been outfitting visitors since 1966, so they know these waters better than anyone. Grab a bike from them too if you want to explore the island on wheels.

For the bigger adventures, head ten minutes north to John's Pass Village & Boardwalk in Madeira Beach. This place is the water sports hub of the whole Gulf Coast. Jet ski rentals, parasailing, fishing charters, it's all right there.

Sunset Drinks and Live Music

I tell everyone the same thing: your first stop on Treasure Island should be Caddy's. It's a beachside bar and grill with direct Gulf access, and it's exactly the right place to be when the sun starts dropping. Grab a drink, kick off your sandals, and watch the sky do its thing.

Right across Gulf Blvd, Ka'Tiki Sunset Beach keeps the evening going. Open-air tiki bar, live rock and blues, and the kind of crowd that's here to relax, not to shout over bad DJs.

If you want live music almost every night, Ricky T's Bar & Grille is your spot. They've got NFL Sunday Ticket in the fall and the best grouper sandwich on the island. I stand by that.

What to Do Beyond the Beach

The Gulf beach is the anchor, but Treasure Island is positioned perfectly for day trips and variety.

10 minutes north is John's Pass Village & Boardwalk. It is the Gulf Coast’s most authentic waterfront hub. Dolphin tours, fishing charters, seafood restaurants, and over one hundred shops line the working marina.

20 minutes north is Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a working marine rescue hospital and one of the best family experiences on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

5 minutes north in Indian Shores is Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. It is free to visit and home to rescued pelicans, owls, eagles, and shorebirds.

55 minutes south is Fort De Soto Park, with historic fort structures, cycling trails, and some of the most scenic beaches in the state.

And 25 minutes east is St. Petersburg, where you will find museums, craft breweries, waterfront dining, and one of the strongest arts scenes in Florida.

Treasure Island works because it lets you choose your pace. Stay still. Or branch out.

Free Weekly Events

Two free weekly events are worth building your schedule around. The Treasure Island Drum Circle is every Sunday at sunset in Gulf Front Park. It's a community get-together with drummers, dancers, and spectators. As the sky goes pink over the Gulf, the energy builds.

It's free, open to all, and totally spontaneous. It's one of those quintessentially Florida experiences that visitors either stumble across by chance or miss entirely.

The Treasure Island Friday Morning Market is a great way to start your Friday. It's right by the Community Center, and local vendors sell all kinds of things like produce, baked goods, crafts, and food.

The market has a fun, neighborhood vibe that makes it the perfect place to start your weekend. Both events are free and require no planning beyond showing up.

Where to Eat and Stay in Treasure Island

Food here leans coastal and straightforward. Fresh Gulf seafood dominates menus. Grouper sandwiches, shrimp platters, and dockside dining are easy to find.

The dining scene here is stronger than you expect for an island this size.

  • Middle Grounds Grill is the special dinner destination. Fresh Gulf seafood, nautical atmosphere, live music on weekends.
  • Ricky T's Bar & Grille delivers live music almost every night and a grouper sandwich that competes with any on the coast.
  • Caddy's Treasure Island is the sunset institution. Direct beach access and frozen cocktails.
  • Foxy's Cafe is the breakfast move. Large portions and old school diner feel.

When it comes to accommodations, beachfront condos are the move. Full kitchens, separate bedrooms, and direct beach access make the experience far more relaxed than a traditional hotel stay. After a full day outside, having space matters.

Hotels like the Bilmar Beach Resort provide a more traditional resort experience, but if you want space and a true home base, a private condo wins every time.

So if you are planning your first Gulf Coast trip and want calm gulf waters, soft white sand, and sunset views right outside your door, check availability at Treasure Bay Vacations and plan your Treasure Island stay today.

Getting There and Getting Around

From Tampa International Airport, the drive is about 45 minutes. From St. Pete Clearwater Airport, closer to 30 minutes. For a full week, I recommend renting a car. It gives you flexibility for day trips to John’s Pass, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Fort De Soto, and Downtown St. Pete.

On the island itself, the Suncoast Beach Trolley runs along Gulf Boulevard connecting the barrier islands without the need to move your car. Bikes are also ideal. The island is flat and compact.

Parking, Timing, and The Mistakes Most Visitors Make

The city owned beach lots are all named after birds. Pelican, Ibis, Heron. They are marked by blue and orange seagull signs along Gulf Boulevard.

Parking is enforced 24 hours a day. Rates are approximately $4.95 per hour on weekdays and slightly higher on weekends. Payment is through the ParkMobile app or by credit card at the meters. Cash is not accepted. The most central access point is Gulf Front Park at 10400 Gulf Boulevard. It offers restrooms, showers, a playground, umbrella rentals, volleyball courts, and ADA beach access mats.

If you are visiting between February and May, arrive before 9 AM on weekends. By 10 AM, prime lots are often full. Two weekly events are worth planning around.

The Treasure Island Drum Circle happens every Sunday evening at sunset at Gulf Front Park. It is spontaneous, local, and completely free. And on Friday mornings, the Treasure Island Market near the Community Center brings local vendors, produce, baked goods, and neighborhood energy to the island.

These are the kinds of things you only know about if someone tells you.

The Island That Makes You Plan Your Return

Treasure Island is not the flashiest destination on the Gulf Coast. It is just genuinely good. Wide beaches, calm gulf waters, and enough activity nearby to keep things interesting.

If you want to experience it the right way from day one instead of learning it the hard way like I did, make Treasure Island your Gulf Coast home base.
