On the Beach
The Gulf of Mexico at Treasure Island is warm, clear, and shallow with a gradually sloping bottom that makes it ideal for swimming at every skill level.
Beyond swimming, the beach rewards those who use it actively. Shell collecting at low tide produces excellent finds. Lightning whelks, moon snails, olive shells, and cockles wash in regularly, especially after a storm or high tide.
The sunrise walk on a near-empty beach before 7 AM is one of the most genuinely peaceful experiences the Gulf Coast offers. The Treasure Island Beach Trail, a paved 0.85-mile path along the mid-island beach, is perfect for morning walks, jogging, cycling, and rollerblading, with Gulf views for its entire length.
Gulf Front Park at 104th Avenue has an ADA beach access mobility mat, beach wheelchair rentals available at City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, beach volleyball courts, a playground, a concession stand open from 10 AM to 5 PM, umbrella and chair rentals, restrooms, and showers.
It's the most fully equipped beach access on the island and the natural starting point for a first visit.
Water Sports on Both Sides
The first thing visitors ask me is where to rent a kayak or a paddleboard. I send them to Treasure Island Beach Rentals at Gulf Front Park every time. They've been outfitting visitors since 1966, so they know these waters better than anyone. Grab a bike from them too if you want to explore the island on wheels.
For the bigger adventures, head ten minutes north to John's Pass Village & Boardwalk in Madeira Beach. This place is the water sports hub of the whole Gulf Coast. Jet ski rentals, parasailing, fishing charters, it's all right there.
Sunset Drinks and Live Music
I tell everyone the same thing: your first stop on Treasure Island should be Caddy's. It's a beachside bar and grill with direct Gulf access, and it's exactly the right place to be when the sun starts dropping. Grab a drink, kick off your sandals, and watch the sky do its thing.
Right across Gulf Blvd, Ka'Tiki Sunset Beach keeps the evening going. Open-air tiki bar, live rock and blues, and the kind of crowd that's here to relax, not to shout over bad DJs.
If you want live music almost every night, Ricky T's Bar & Grille is your spot. They've got NFL Sunday Ticket in the fall and the best grouper sandwich on the island. I stand by that.
What to Do Beyond the Beach
The Gulf beach is the anchor, but Treasure Island is positioned perfectly for day trips and variety.
10 minutes north is John's Pass Village & Boardwalk. It is the Gulf Coast’s most authentic waterfront hub. Dolphin tours, fishing charters, seafood restaurants, and over one hundred shops line the working marina.
20 minutes north is Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a working marine rescue hospital and one of the best family experiences on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
5 minutes north in Indian Shores is Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. It is free to visit and home to rescued pelicans, owls, eagles, and shorebirds.
55 minutes south is Fort De Soto Park, with historic fort structures, cycling trails, and some of the most scenic beaches in the state.
And 25 minutes east is St. Petersburg, where you will find museums, craft breweries, waterfront dining, and one of the strongest arts scenes in Florida.
Treasure Island works because it lets you choose your pace. Stay still. Or branch out.
Free Weekly Events
Two free weekly events are worth building your schedule around. The Treasure Island Drum Circle is every Sunday at sunset in Gulf Front Park. It's a community get-together with drummers, dancers, and spectators. As the sky goes pink over the Gulf, the energy builds.
It's free, open to all, and totally spontaneous. It's one of those quintessentially Florida experiences that visitors either stumble across by chance or miss entirely.
The Treasure Island Friday Morning Market is a great way to start your Friday. It's right by the Community Center, and local vendors sell all kinds of things like produce, baked goods, crafts, and food.
The market has a fun, neighborhood vibe that makes it the perfect place to start your weekend. Both events are free and require no planning beyond showing up.
